Unistrut Channel and fittings are not the easiest products to handle when shipping via an LTL Carrier. The Unistrut channel is typically 10′ or 20′ in length. Each bundle can weigh up to 2,000 lbs. This creates some unique obstacles when preparing shipments for trans-atlantic customers. With over 50 years of shipping experience, Unistrut Midwest has the expertise and capabilities to handle any unique shipping requirements. Contact your Unistrut rep today to discuss our custom packaging options to make sure your Unistrut channel arrives in perfect condition.
A unique case study on Unistrut Midwest’s shipping capabilities can be seen in this recent shipment we prepared for a customer shipping to Jamaica. Our US based customer had a project in Jamaica in which they needed several thousand feet of Unistrut channel to perform their installation. The contractor did not want to rely on local suppliers to source their materials, so they arranged an order with their local and trusted Unistrut supplier, Unistrut Midwest.
The shipping requirements on this project were fairly unique. The shipment would be co-loaded with other materials the contractor needed for the job in Kentucky. The load would then be shipped to Miami, FL and transferred to a sea container. With the bundles requiring multiple movements before landing at the final port, our customer wanted to add extra protection to the Unistrut channel to make sure it arrived in mint condition. Unistrut was able to custom make a skid to package 350 pieces of Unistrut channel per skid. Each skid was custom made to offer protection in transit and allow the fork lift operators at each transfer station to easily be able to move the 5,000 skid.
Another unique requirement for international shipments is ISPM-15 code in regards to what types of wood may be used to construct pallets or skids. According to ISPM-15, all solid wood and wood packaging materials (WPM) over 6 mm in thickness used for export, such as wooden pallets, dunnage and crating, must be treated. In the heat treatment process, WPM must be heated until its internal temperature reaches 56 degrees Celcius or more for 30 minutes. This is regarded as the most effective and environmentally friendly way to destroy harmful pests contained in wood. Unistrut was able to source the heat treated wood and construct our skids using only compliant materials.
