Welcome to Unistrut Midwest 2024 Interns
June 5, 2024
Unistrut Midwest is excited to welcome our first class of interns: Jake Schorling (Marketing), Jack Ryder (Finance), and Cameron Lee (Business Operations)! This summer's internship program was spearheaded by Justen Harris, Human Resources, to help young people get hands-on experience in the business world and advance their personal development. The new program will focus on both exposure to Unistrut Midwest's specific operations as well as more general business strategy and education.
Behind the Scenes at Unistrut Midwest
Part of the internship program will be introducing the interns to how Unistrut Midwest operates. From job sites to the boardroom, the interns will be seeing each step of our process. This will include visiting installation sites and each of our branches: Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis, and Detroit.
We will also be discussing Unistrut Midwest's core values, both how they impact our day-to-day operations and how we established them. Our core values are:
- Adaptable
- Ability to change approach and style with changes in demands
- Reliable
- Responsive, consistent, producing end results
- Customer First
- We are here for our customers first and foremost
- Radical Candor
- Care personally while you challenge directly, without being aggressive or insincere
- Process Driven
- Create a plan and then work on the plan, driven by documented workflow
- Growth Oriented
- Always look for ways to expand our service and delivery
Another critical part of the internship program will be creating relationships with company leadership. Interns will be participating in monthly C-Suite lunch-and-learns to further educate themselves on both Unistrut Midwest and general business practices. There will also be monthly lunches with Kevin Brooks, Unistrut Midwest President and CEO, to pick his brain on his business experience.

Business Management 101
While much of the program will focus on the specifics of Unistrut Midwest, we will also be working with the interns on business management education and self-improvement. This will include monthly management classes to expand on concepts they may have learned in school.
As a group project, the interns will be reading and discussing Traction by Gino Wickman, a book that introduces key components to strengthening a business and giving leadership more focus, growth, and enjoyment.
Finally, our interns will be completing DiSC assessments to determine where they rank in the four main business personality types: dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness.
Our hope with this internship program is to not only introduce our interns to how Unistrut Midwest works and give them more insight into our industry, but to give them practical business management experience as well. We're looking forward to getting to know our interns and to sharing a summer of learning.
