Notes from the CEO: Workplace Safety
Posted by Kevin Brooks on May 3, 2024
With National Construction Safety Week starting May 6, we have an opportunity to analyze and review our current approach to safety at Unistrut Midwest and stress the importance of remaining diligent to our safety protocols.
Unfortunately, in my career I have been part of a company who lost an employee to an accident that potentially could have been avoided if proper safety protocol was followed. That is something I never want to go through again.
Having seen such a workplace tragedy occur, I have made safety protocols a top priority every day since. I believe that a true commitment to safety starts with leadership setting the tone for the rest of the organization. It's up to us to show our team members that we take their safety seriously.
At Unistrut Midwest we work every day to improve our current safety tools, policies, and procedures. These improvements start with open communication and Radical Candor throughout the entire Unistrut Midwest team.
Every employee is encouraged to share ideas, thoughts, and concerns surrounding our existing safety plan. We provide opportunities for this discourse through things like:
- Monthly Town Hall meetings
- Our anonymous "Ask Kevin" email
- Regular safety meetings
We review and analyze every response to identify ways to improve our guidelines.
We may never achieve 100% elimination of accidents or injuries, but I strongly believe that we can greatly reduce the number of incidents by regularly reviewing, updating, and following our safety protocols. These practices also ensure that if an accident does occur, it will not result in serious injury or loss of life.
By continuing to review and update our approach, we are building a lasting culture at Unistrut Midwest that fosters and grows a safety-conscious organization.
