Get to Know Unistrut Accessories
June 3, 2025
Unistrut is well known for its signature continuous channel that can easily create custom support solutions, but what is that channel without the appropriate accessories? Unistrut's line of attachments and components is what takes simple strut and turns it into an adaptable, modular system.
Unistrut Accessories Create an Engineered System
Unistrut is the original metal framing system featuring a unique, weldless connection. This is made possible by the Unistrut line of fittings, fasteners, hangers, clamps, and more. It eliminates welding and drilling through the use of nut and bolt connections that can occur anywhere on the channel. This connection method gives Unistrut one of its biggest advantages over traditional welded steel structures: adjustability.
The Unistrut system is 100% adjustable and reusable. Whether you need a slight adjustment to account for a change when assembling on site or a full redesign to accommodate new priorities, Unistrut frames are simply bolted together using various Unistrut attachments. No drilling or welding means that parts can be dismantled, repurposed, and adjusted as needs change.
Unistrut Accessories Ensure Safety
Unistrut systems are often used to support medical equipment, MEP systems, and access platforms. The best way to ensure the safety of both equipment and staff is to use Unistrut accessories alongside Unistrut channel. Each component is designed to work seamlessly with Unistrut channel to create connections that are as dependable as welding.
Unistrut is tested as an engineered system backed by a catalog full of pertinent information, including load ratings and applications. Engineers and architects rely on this information when creating drawings and plans. By using the recommended parts as specified and accurately determining channel load limits, you can rest assured that your Unistrut support system will be secure.
Unistrut Accessories and Uses
Below are some of the more commonly used Unistrut components and examples of their application. The full line of Unistrut accessories is available in the Unistrut General Engineering catalog.
Nuts and Hardware
Spring Nuts
Spring nuts are used in any type of connection between Unistrut channels or channel to other components. The spring holds the nut in a precise location, which is especially useful for overhead applications.
Channel Nuts
Channel nuts work in much the same way as spring nuts. Just like spring nuts, channel nuts create a strong, vise-like grip when tightened against the Unistrut channel edges, creating a box-like configuration for strength.
Hex Head Bolts
All Unistrut nuts require a bolt to complete the connection. Bolts require only a wrench to tighten the nuts to the channel, creating a connection that is as secure as welding using only hand tools.
General Fittings
Flat Plate Fittings
Flat plate fittings form a weldless connection at a flat, 180-degree angle, between intersecting or parallel channel or as a way to extend channel. Flat plate fittings are also integral to connecting Unistrut to threaded rod for drop-downs.
90 Degree Fittings
Commonly used to create right angle connections between vertical and horizontal channel, 90-degree fittings can also be used to connect channel to other surfaces, like a wall.
Angular Fittings
When Unistrut needs to be attached at an angle other than 90 degrees, angular fittings can create those connections. These fittings allow users to create custom solutions even when non-standard angles are at play.
Z Shape Fittings
Z shape fittings can be used to connect either parallel channels that need to be offset or perpendicular channels that are stacked on top of one another, creating different elevations in a tight space.
U Shape Fittings
U shape fittings are commonly used when a channel needs to be securely enclosed or where a looped support structure is needed.
Wing Shape Fittings
Wing shape fittings allow multiple channels to connect at different angles from one fitting. These are commonly seen in shelving or racking systems.
Post Bases
Post bases provide stability for vertical Unistrut channel and can be securely installed in many types of surfaces, including concrete.
Pipe Clamps
Pipe clamps, hangers, and brackets support electrical and mechanical services alongside Unistrut channel. They provide a secure hold that prevents movement for pipes, conduits, and tubing.
Brackets and Brace Fittings
Unistrut brackets and brace fittings are commonly used for shelving, adjustable racking, cable tray support, equipment support, stair treads, and more.
Beam Clamps
Beam clamps attach Unistrut channel to existing structural elements like bar joists. Using these clamps provides a secure connection without the need for welding.
Trolleys
Unistrut trolley systems can be designed to move equipment weighing anywhere from ten to 600 pounds with reliability and ease. They are commonly used in applications like curtain tracks or movable shelving units.
Other Fixtures
Electrical Fittings
Electrical fittings turn metal framing components into electrical support structures that are UL-listed and CSA-approved. These fixtures can be used for raceways, trapeze hangers, cable-tray supports, lighting grids, and more.
Concrete Inserts
Concrete inserts are anchors that connect Unistrut channel to pre-cast, pre-stressed, or poured-in-place concrete floors, walls, or ceilings.
