What Unistrut Midwest Wants You to Know About Baffle Support Ceiling Grids

In the past few years, we've seen more and more customers looking for ceiling grid solutions for high-end spaces where the aesthetics are valued just as much as the functionality. One example is ceiling grid supports for baffles. 

Maybe because they are viewed as more of an accessory than a structural element, baffles and their required ceiling grid supports often fall to the bottom of the priority list. By the time our team is brought on, the customer is typically relying on delegating the ceiling grid design to our team.  

While a baffle support ceiling grid is not a complicated solution, the details of the design can make the difference between a ceiling grid that looks slapdash and one that adds to the overall function and appearance of the baffle solution. That's why it's crucial to partner with a team that has knowledge of both acoustical baffles and ceiling grid design.

What to Know About a Unistrut Ceiling Grid for Baffle Supports  

  1. Account for the ceiling grid at the beginning
    Ask any contractor about being brought into a project mid-flight, and they’ll tell you it’s less than ideal. As with any other aspect of a project, it’s much harder to fit a baffle support ceiling grid into a space after the fact than to plan for it ahead of time. Working with a structural support partner to plan for the baffle support ceiling grid at the start of your project eliminates the need to work around obstacles after construction begins. 

  2. Review the Unistrut Ceiling Grid Design Checklist
    Just because baffles are so lightweight doesn’t mean there aren’t pertinent details needed to design a ceiling grid to support them. Be sure to consider these line items from the Unistrut Ceiling Grid Design checklist

    • What type of structure will the grid be hanging from?  
      • Web joists, I-beams, a concrete deck, etc.  
    • How far below the structure will the grid hang? 
        • One way to find this measurement is to determine how high above the floor the baffles need to be

  3. Review the vendor's requirements 
    Every baffle vendor has different criteria and options for installing their product. Two of the questions from the Unistrut Ceiling Grid Design Checklist can only be answered by reviewing the vendor's requirements.  

    • Is there a desired layout of the items the grid will be supporting? 
      • Typically, the ceiling grid is run perpendicular to the orientation of the baffles, but installation specifications and vendor requirements may necessitate a different layout 
    • What is the preferred baffle to Unistrut channel connection method?  
      • Many baffle solutions have integrated connection methods, from clips that attach to channel, to embedded threads for drop-down rods, to notches cut into the panels to slide directly onto Unistrut channel 

  4. When in doubt, go with a universal solution 
    If timing doesn’t allow you to gather the above information before we join the project, we recommend designing and installing a universal Unistrut system that should work with just about anything: a four-foot on-center grid that runs perpendicular to the baffles. In some instances, however, this can be an overengineered solution, which is why we recommend nailing down the details of your baffle support ceiling grid as early in the project timeline as possible.
