Finding the Right Nut for your Unistrut Channel

Finding the Right Nut for your Unistrut Channel

July 13, 2023

One of Unistrut’s defining features is its ability to easily assemble and adjust without welding. And while Unistrut may have become synonymous with channel, the secret to Unistrut’s unique weldless connection relies on nuts and bolts.

The initial Unistrut concept was a simple spring nut and bolt connecting a fitting to a continuous slotted channel. As variations of Unistrut products have developed over the years, so too have specific nuts for different applications.

The Unique Weldless Connection

The initial concept behind Unistrut’s design is adjustable and reusable and requires no welding, drilling, or special tools.

  1. Insert the spring nut anywhere along the continuous slotted channel. The rounded nut ends permit easy insertion.
  2. A 90° clockwise turn aligns the grooves in the nut with the inturned edges of the channel. Fittings can be placed anywhere along the channel opening, permitting complete freedom of adjustment.
  3. Insert the bolt through the fitting and into the spring nut.
  4. Additional channel sections can be bolted to the fitting already in place by following the above steps.
  5. Tightening with a wrench locks the serrated teeth of the nut into the inturned edges of the channel, to complete a strong, vise-like connection.

The spring nut used in this application saves time and effort for installers. The spring holds the nut in place, saving 30 seconds to a minute per connection point, which can ultimately save money on labor costs for installation.

While the spring nut is the most commonly used in Unistrut applications, it isn’t universal to all types of channel. Selecting the appropriate nut for your channel is crucial to ensuring a smooth installation.
