How to Reuse Existing Unistrut for a New Solution

November 3, 2026

One of the many benefits of leveraging Unistrut over traditional materials like structural steel is Unistrut's ability to be reused. This is helpful for small adjustments in the field since no cutting or welding is required to get the perfect fit. But this feature can be even more impactful when using existing Unistrut material to build a new solution.

How is Unistrut Reused?

Because the Unistrut system eliminates welding and drilling, it is a 100% adjustable and reusable material capable of infinite configurations. With its continuous channel, new and existing frames can be connected by simply bolting the Unistrut nut to both channels, producing the same strength as welding. No drilling or welding means we can dismantle, repurpose, and adjust parts as your needs change. This is especially helpful when replacing existing equipment with new machinery that requires different support.

How to Identify if Your Unistrut System Can Be Reused

The first step in reusing your existing Unistrut is engaging with an experienced Unistrut team, ideally as early on in the project as possible. By partnering with experienced project managers, engineers, and installation experts like we have at Unistrut Midwest, you can be confident that your material is being reused safely and effectively.

A lot of information can be shared with our team via pictures even before an official site visit. With a few images of your existing system, our team can get a high-level feel for how your supports were designed and installed, what components were used, and if we feel confident in the methods initially used.

After that initial assessment, our team will require some critical information about your new equipment, including details like:

  • Load criteria
  • Ceiling height requirements
  • Rail location requirements

With all of that data collected, our team can give a confident opinion on whether or not your existing Unistrut can be reused for a new support solution.

Common Applications for Unistrut Reuse

We commonly reuse Unistrut in medical applications, and rework existing material in applications like:

  • Surgical lights
  • Exam lights
  • X-ray systems

Systems supporting booms and cath labs can be reworked as well, but the loading and general design criteria requirements can be much trickier to achieve when reworked instead of starting from scratch. While it is always a plus to reuse existing material, we never suggest doing so at the expense of your support system's performance.

Reusing Unistrut: Client Example

Our team was contacted by an existing client to replace their current medical equipment support system with a new solution. The existing four-rail system was a decade old, and the new requirements dictated a six-rail system. Instead of ripping out and replacing the existing Unistrut supports, our team determined that we could simply add on to the current system.

We added new headers, verticals, bracing, intermediate rails, and finish rails to turn this four-rail system into a six-rail system. The customer estimated that a new installation would take a week, but we completed the work in only two days and saved them thousands of dollars.

Do you have an existing Unistrut support system that needs an overhaul? Contact our team to find out if we can reuse your material to save you time and money.
