Save On-Site Labor Time and Expense with Unistrut Midwest Kitting Services
March 17, 2026
While our team often sings the praises of prefabrication for keeping projects on time and on budget, a fully prefabricated solution is not the only way to leverage off-site labor. We also offer kitting and assembly services, where parts are preloaded and bundled to make assembly on-site easier. No matter the size of the application, kitting's time and cost savings can benefit any secondary support system project.

What is Kitting?
Unistrut Midwest offers kitting and assembly services that help your team save on-site labor time and costs. These services start simply, with tasks like preloading hardware on fittings, which is ideal for medical support systems and data center ceiling grids. We can also deliver cut-to-size channel, reducing waste and resulting in incredibly accurate cuts with a strict tolerance under 1/16".
Those services are combined and expanded upon in kitting, when Unistrut Midwest packages channel, fittings, and hardware in easy-to-use, clearly labeled kits. Kitting services can range from parts packaged and labeled for individual project areas, to assemblies with cut-to-size channel that has been preloaded with fittings, to partially assembled racks that can be flat-packed for shipping.

With each of these services, necessary parts are delivered to the job site not as raw materials, but as partially-assembled pieces that are ready and labeled for installation. By allowing the Unistrut Midwest team to handle the initial, more tedious steps, your team can hit the ground running with assembly, reducing on-site installation time.
Client Kitting Applications
Our team has leveraged kitting and sub-assembly for years to help clients meet the ever-shortening deadlines in the construction industry. Recently, we were working on a cable tray support rack project with an incredibly accelerated timeline. The client knew that their traditional stick building method wouldn't meet the deadline, so they leaned on our expertise to get the job done.

Our team tackled this challenge in three ways:
- Delivering fully prefabricated racks that were ready for installation
- Sending kitted materials to the site for assembly and installation
- Sending kitted materials to the client's fab shop for additional assembly and installation
This approach optimized team member availability while staggering installation times, accomplishing an overall installation timeline that would have otherwise been impossible.
In another kitting example, the client was less focused on the timeline and more on the bottom line. Our team was contracted to prefabricate riser racks for a healthcare construction project, but the client opted to receive their racks as partially assembled kits to streamline shipping. By kitting and flat-packing the racks, we were able to ship more pieces on a single truck than if the solution had been delivered fully assembled. This allowed the client's solution to ship on fewer trucks, saving the client anywhere from 5x to 30x on delivery costs. And, the client benefited from the time savings of receiving a partially-constructed solution, reducing on-site labor time for installation.

Whether to save on shipping or labor costs or to meet a tight deadline, kitting can be a huge benefit for projects of any size. Interested to learn how this service could help your next project? Contact our team to learn more.
