How Unistrut Midwest is Meeting BIM Design Demands

How Unistrut Midwest is Meeting BIM Design Demands

Posted by Shane Beeler on June 24, 2026

Since joining Unistrut Midwest as a BIM Designer, I have been a part of a concerted effort to expand our in-house services in order to meet customer demand. Our customers are facing accelerated build schedules, especially for data centers, and we are working to alleviate some of the stress that comes with those tight timelines. By offering in-house BIM design and engineering, Unistrut Midwest is able to quickly turn around quotes, plans, and adjustments to help keep our customers on schedule.

The Role of an In-House BIM Designer

Part of my role is to provide design plans for customer jobs, which include custom modular supports that provide adequate support for the desired equipment, and creating shop drawings and cut lists that go to the fab shop for production. This work requires attention to detail and accuracy so that we can avoid any complications when the engineered solution is installed on site.

By bringing this role in-house at Unistrut Midwest, we are able to deliver designs that work as intended when fabricated, and we can do so in timeframes that consistently beat our competitors' turnaround times. And thanks to the combined product expertise of our team, we are able to design creative solutions that accommodate unique builds.

The other side of my job is jumping in to help with emergency fixes. Whether a customer handled the initial BIM designs themselves and needs help working out the details, or an existing client suddenly changed their pipe dimensions and needs an all-new support design mid-project, my team and I are available to help with these urgent requests at various project stages.

In these high-stress situations, having our BIM design services in-house is a game-changer. Our ability to quickly turn a design around is even more impactful for these customers who need a fix as soon as possible. This response time is one of the many ways we work to build trusting and lasting relationships with our customers.

Designing Custom Parts for Sikla Solutions

For both regularly scheduled and emergency designs, one of the more unique ways we support our customers is through creating custom parts for their solutions. Leveraging modular materials like Sikla siFramo and Unistrut allows us to create custom support solutions for all of our customers, but sometimes we need to take that a step further and design a custom fixture that helps bring a customer's ideal solution to life.

These custom part designs typically arise when a customer has very specific mounting requirements between their equipment and a Sikla beam. Using the details in the BIM model, I can design a bracket or fixture that aligns with both the Sikla connection points and the equipment mounting points. Once the designs are approved, we send them to a fabricator to create the custom part to complete our customer's custom solution.

This service is just another way that we are able to use our in-house BIM design team to continue to provide excellent service to our customers.

By bringing BIM design in-house, Unistrut Midwest is able to apply our expertise directly to the design process. This makes us an even more adaptable partner for our customers, allowing us to meet demanding timelines while still providing expertly designed custom solutions.
