Prefabricating a Custom Unistrut Support Frame for a Living Wall Installation

Prefabricating a Custom Unistrut Support Frame for a Living Wall Installation

July 30, 2024

Bringing potted plants into your office or commercial space is a great way to infuse some life into your environment and bring organic elements into your design. Living walls take those benefits even further. With their dramatic scale and impactful designs, living walls turn plants into art. But the benefits aren’t just aesthetic; living walls can improve the well-being of those in your space as well.

Large-scale plant installations like living walls are a great way to address issues with indoor air quality. In buildings where air is mechanically supplied and recycled, plants can naturally remove toxins like VOC, particulates, and pathogens from the air. A living wall will also increase oxygen levels and natural humidity in your space.

While deciding to install a living wall may be an easy choice, the installation itself is a bit more complicated. Living walls require piping, lighting, and electrical support as well as adequate support for the weight of the plants themselves, all in a vertical and typically shallow application. That’s where Unistrut comes in.

Unistrut Midwest Living Wall Support Solution

Unistrut Midwest partnered with Unistrut Construction in New Jersey to designengineer, and install a Unistrut frame for a living wall. This living wall required piping for irrigation, and lighting and electrical supports behind the plantings themselves. The curveball for this project? The 20-foot-tall structure would be fabricated in our Ohio plant and then shipped to New Jersey for installation.

In order to easily transport this support structure, the Unistrut Midwest team prefabricated the supports in 6’8” x 6’2” modules that could be shipped via standard transportation methods. These dimensions also allowed for easy installation on site, as the modules were designed to be stacked on top of one another to create the full structure with minimal field assembly.

By prefabricating the support in smaller sections, our team was able to keep fabrication, shipping, and installation costs down. All while still providing a custom support solution for our clients.
